Period Ally

Menstrual stigma doesn’t only affect girls. It is shaped, reinforced — or reduced — by everyone around them.
Including boys.
Period Ally is Eco Femme’s puberty education and menstrual awareness programme for adolescent boys. Through interactive school sessions, it creates a safe space to talk about puberty, menstruation, gender, empathy and respect.

Why Boys?

Through Pad for Pad, Eco Femme’s menstrual health work with girls, some girls felt too embarrassed to carry their cloth pad kits at school for fear that boys would notice or tease them. Some even avoided changing their pads.

But the boys were curious.

“Why are you here? Can you teach us also?”

What Happens in a Period Ally Session? (H2)

Each Period Ally puberty education session runs 1.5–2 hours with boys aged 10–19, facilitated by trained Eco Femme educators. The conversation is two-way and starts with simple agreements: no wrong questions, no teasing, no judgement.
Topic Description
PUBERTY Physical and emotional changes during adolescence
MENSTRUATION Reproductive system, menstrual cycle and products
EMPATHY + RESPECT Gender, stigma and supportive behaviour

Pilot follow-up: in a small sample of seven boys, all reported better understanding of menstruation, greater comfort discussing it respectfully, and a stronger sense of responsibility towards girls. Every boy said the session should be offered to more boys.
School Boys Learning About Periods in India

In Their Own Words

“Till today I thought period blood was dirty. Today I learnt it’s nutrition-rich blood that helps form a baby.”

“So, if periods don’t happen, we wouldn’t exist?”

Part of Something Bigger

Period Ally grows out of Eco Femme’s experience with Pad for Pad. One programme builds knowledge, confidence and informed choice for girls; the other builds understanding, empathy and respect among boys.
