2. The Crimson Movement’s book Cycling to Grandma’s House:
A story book for young children. Join Luna in her journey discovering, what makes girls/ women so special and how this is celebrated around the world.
Why we like it: This children’s book makes the simple point that menstruation is special without any mention of blood, a uterus, or shedding a lining. It is a great way to introduce and establish menstruation as something that is ‘big’, but yet very special to younger girls and boys.
3. Menstrupedia’s Comic The Friendly Guide to Periods for Girls:
A comic book that explains menstruation, the menstrual cycle, and puberty in an Indian context. It is expressed through a group of friends learning about periods and puberty from one girl’s older sister.
Why we like it: Colourful comic books are hard to put down! It’s a great introductory tool for girls (9-14 years) who are ready to move on to the details of anatomy.
Videos and Documentaries
1. The Waratah Project’s Celebrating Your First Period Video:
A short animated video explaining that ‘getting your period doesn’t have to be a pain—it’s something to celebrate.’ A nice companion to ‘Cycling to Grandma’s House.’
Why we like it: This video sets a positive tone, is short and sweet, and fun to watch.
2. Monthlies: The Moon Inside You For Teens:
A playful documentary presenting information about menstruation, the menstrual cycle, and how girls around the world experience menarche.
Why we like it: This film provides clear information in an engaging way. It honours many voices through interviews with teenage girls and a gynecologist. This also explores menarche celebrations as well as ‘menstrual myths’ around the world.
First menstruation is a moment of empowerment and calls for a celebration. Consider celebrating the first period of the girls in your life by gifting them a sustainable menstrual product and/or a resource to have them know more about this journey.
